In classical guitar parlance, notes that are damped by the right palm as they're being played are usually designated "pizzicato," since the resulting sound is similar to that of pizz on bowed string instruments. In the scores I have where this is desired, the composer writes "pizz." followed by a spanner like this ----------------------------------| to indicate how long to keep doing it. Maybe in more modern scores it's done by different noteheads, I don't know. If I saw "dead notes" written, I think I'd know what to do, but I'm leaning toward "muted" instead.
