Be prepared that my suggestion probably can be implemented entirely in Scheme, and that it is highly discouraged to implement this kind of code in C++ (i.e., if you manage to implement it in c++, it's unlikely that the patch will be merged into official lily). So it may be good to see if your friend also is keen on learning scheme (if so, I think this feature may be a nice way to approach the scheme language).
