Right, but what about developers or contributors who need to compile?
INSTALL is still valuable to me.  The only problem is, INSTALL may not
list possible bugs or problems with recent configurations (64 bits
boxes, ...).

I agree with Graham about integrating INSTALL and reworking it so the
reader first reads a section about installation of binary packages, then
reads a warning about compiling from source so he will not read the
secction about compilation.
