It seems to me there are two possible fixes: one is to require python 2.4, the other is to ship the relevant library as part of lilypond and use that when python 2.3 is being used. There is some Debian-delay getting all the dependencies for 2.8.1 going, so I'm happy to wait for the next release for it.
