Seems like up-to-staff was replaced by stem-end-position in september 2003. I've tried to set stem-end-position to different values, but there is nothing interesting happening (at least for tab use.)
The \stemDown introduced in the docs don't mimic this behavior; is this
important for tab users?
Well, many tabs use this feature.
