Well, the first beam is the right one IMHO (and this is what I
suggest) -- it uses less vertical space than the second one. Similar
situations can be found in Beethoven sonatas; sorry for not showing
something real

In most situations it is better to use the vertical space optimally
(this is as few as possible), so this should get more weight in a
trade-off.
