Yep, you are right. I added windows style line endings to the original file, then ran 'diff -u' again and got this smaller file.

The patch seems to be so large only because you did not ignore white
space. And you have those extra 0xd line endings that DOS/Windows likes so
much, so there is a white space difference in *every* line.
