Did you tell fontconfig? See the comments in output-gnome.

I read those comments, but they do not seem to apply to the cygwin situation i have here (which gives the same error like at Pedro's).
There is no ~/.fonts here. So where would lilypond find those .otf files? I cannot find other .otf files here yet which would hint me a good place except those in the mf/out dir which are not installed by make install.
And there is no fontconfig either (does not seem necessary up to now?)
