Letters ae were even as a glued character Ć (ć) in Oxford English Dictionary (online version). I have Webster's New World Dictonary of the American Language (Second college edition from year 1970 :) In that dictionary - for `aesthetic´ there is given an explanation, but - for `esthetic´ there is a `same as´ link to `aesthetic´. So, I'd also vote for `aesthetic'.
