Why not have a complete change of behavior within \notes blocks, or within brackets nested within \notes blocks(?) so your .el can be of more use in the rest of the .ly file? Even an extra set of brackets would be a small price to pay to have things snap together pretty. \notes { stuff \clet \etc { e4 d8 }} I doubt if you would find it necessary though. I think you are doing it the hard way, that's all. You could have the number of barchecks in the first line of \notes with a barcheck in it set the number of barchecks in succeeding lines in that paragraph and indent the whole paragraph. Barchecks should be at the ends of lines, not the beginnings, because that's the way it is done in printed music, and because the end of the line provides whitespace. If HW can be persuaded to have lilypond ignore numbers hard after barchecks, perhaps there could be automatic measure numbers (from the first in the paragraph) as a feature as well? Extra space between the barcheck and the note according to the first barcheck and align where possible on the basis of the first line in the paragraph? e1 |11 e2 e |12 e4 e e e |13 e2 e |14 e1 |15 e8 e e e e e e e |16 e1 |17 e2 e |18 e4 e e e |19 e1 DaveA ------------------------------------------------------------ Information is not knowledge.
