MariaDB was a trauma response to Oratroll's acquisition of MySQL the same way
Libre Office was a trauma reaction to Oratroll's acquisition of OpenOffice.
(According to the creator of Java, they acquired the corpse of Sun to do things
like sue Google over dalvik, and any actual technology was secondary to the
patent portfolio.)

While you can learn a lot by studying xfree86->x.org or etherial->wireshark it's
more "what kind of damage can a project survive" rather than "what is a good
idea for a healthy project to do".
