Consider the implicit patent grant in the BSD license. This arises as a
result of the exhaustion doctrine in equitable law. Simple text,
complicated result. That licenses and any form of contract whatsoever are
open to interpretation is mainly due to the fact that they rest on a
tremendous body of law and case law, in the case of the United States going
back to British common law.

So, unfortunately, no contract or license is really small and simple.
