Libvirt has a notion of a virStreamPtr, which is an object which tracks an arbitrary pass-through channel. Any API such as virDomainOpenConsole that needs to pass data in both directions between the client and the source opens up a virStreamPtr, then passes that data alongside all the other RPC calls. For more details on how the data is passed, read docs/internals/rpc.html, and look at the stream type packets.
