Oh, I haven't a Ubuntu system at present, could you try a latest libvirt? http://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=libvirt-bin or directly git clone latest libvirt and libvirt-perl codes from upstream and compile & run them again:

Fortunately the backing storage file is still present on the disk although its pool in virsh disappears. Has anybody come across a similar problem before? Any help is highly appreciated.
