We want to add --as-needed to some of our libraries to avoid dragging in
unneeded dependencies in some complex build systems.

Unfortunately, it breaks when libtool is involved as it reorders it and puts
it after the relevant libraries.

We've been carrying the attached patch for some time. Perhaps something like
it can be merged upstream?
