But, let's NOT cut out the middle-man!

If the courier distribution is not working for end users, they need to know 
about it so they can fix it. It's very important for Free Software that bug 
reports are submitted to the person who can fix them - patching around the 
issue locally means the developers may not find out there is a problem, and 
then the next release will still have the bug, which is bad for the project and 
bad for the user.
