Looking at the code in ltdo.c:try_dlopen(), I see that there is a 
'try_preload_only' advise flag.  If this flag is set while invoking 
try_dlopen() with the archive extension in lt_dlopenadvise(), then the 
spurious dlopens with the archive extension should be gone.
