this patch does not apply against branch-1.5....
So the following tests are still failing with gcc:
FAIL: demo-make.test
FAIL: demo-exec.test
FAIL: demo-inst.test
FAIL: tagdemo-make.test
FAIL: tagdemo-make.test
FAIL: tagdemo-make.test
cc_r / xlC_r is working fine.
