Ummm, if I understand your problem, this has been fixed in CVS HEAD:

However, it was never committed on the 1.4.x branch, even though it was submitted prior to the 1.4.3 release. Unfortunately, 1.4.x is now officially dead, so if you're using that series you'll need to patch your libtool yourself, using Ossama's patch from
