Just reiterating the link to the macro that I add regularly to configure.ac http://ac-archive.sourceforge.net/guidod/ac_set_default_paths_system.html The main trick is to modify only the default-path (!!) of the libdirpath and therefore let the user be free to override it on the commandline.
