make install-strip with libtool (CVS HEAD) && automake (CVS HEAD) fails

Is this a bug, or a non-existant feature?

symptoms:

automake's makefile calls libtool:

 STRIPPROG='strip' /bin/sh ./libtool --mode=install -s hello.exe
/usr/src/hellolib/build/t
/usr/local/bin/hello.exe
libtool: unrecognized option `-s'
Try `libtool --help' for more information.
