I think we should apply this to the trunk after making a 1.4 branch as
it is a big change.  I also think that after 1.4 is out, we should
feature freeze for 1.5 (tags merge + ltconfig->libtool.m4) so that 1.5
is only a few months behind 1.4.

I'd like to tidy up the cygwin support in the demos too, but won't
have the time to do that until after 1.4.
