I've pushed the patch below to git master of Libtool now. Please test as described before, if at all possible. I changed the pic flag to -PIC so also large codes will work. If you need to use -pic for more efficiency, set lt_cv_prog_compiler_pic_F77 and/or ..._FC on the configure command line to override this. (The "(tiny change)" just denotes that no copyright papers have been signed.)
