Do you really want to reopen this can? IMVHO 2.x took so long because
it was destabilized *too* *much*.
Both of you are correct. 2.x was very destablized for a couple of
years and then we became paranoid for a couple more years in order to
make up for past excesses. The test suite became a whole lot better
in the mean time.
We should always keep in mind that libtool is just a 'tool' and
eventually it should be feature-rich enough to only require periodic
updates for compiler and operating system changes. We are not far
from that objective.
