I started working in this problem space ca 2003-2004, and proposed a very rough patch 2005. Ralf help immensely and it all got into a much better shape. 2006 was the first time my patches showed up in a form that resembles what's in the pr-msvc-support branch. Ralf created the branch in 2008 with the intention that the work should not bit-rot completely. But having the branch in the official repo has made me reluctant to rebase, refactor and otherwise change things even though it is not correct or "tasty" enough, so the branch has not really worked from my point of view.
