…except that it is, in that it allows the backend to report back a css::beans::Optional with !IsPresent to let configmgr use an already present value---even one from the same layer (which had confused me, but for which we already have prior art, e.g., in officecfg/registry/data/org/openoffice/VCL.xcu). So it was indeed 768ea2924680fc4beb75a782cb0faf26695fee53 which broke things, reverted now as 71ed01e2edb27d09104a412425d5b99247efa4d4. Sorry for the noise and trouble.
