Basically, don't bother to try to do it "without installing LibreOffice".
LibreOffice does not have some magic simple "convert-doc-to-postscript" library that you could use. Sure, you could try to come up with a customized installation of LibreOffice that includes only those bits that are needed for this special case. But it's a lot of work, and *you* have to do it, *and* *you* have to support it yourself. And please don't send private mail on a subject that starts on a mailing list.
