What works fine for me with a recent local LO master build on Linux is:

> $ ./setsdkenv_unix
[...]
> $ cd examples/java/DocumentHandling
> $ make
[...]
> $ make DocumentLoader.run
[...]
> # LO starts up showing some sample Writer document
So maybe you are using the SDK in a wrong way; or else you would need to
debug why things don't work for you.
