I thought that --nologo avoids the splash? How can I avoid that splash,
and what exactly does it do?

Despite the name, oosplash (source entry point at desktop/unx/source/start.c) does more than just show the splash screen. One other main job of it is to restart soffice.bin as needed (during first start; after a crash; in response to some "restart LO now" dialogs).
