for most scenario except tweaking the installation scripts that should not be needed, as: ./instdir already contains a fully runnable installation that is populated on the fly during the build. If you need to test an installation, doing make test-install will run the install script and create a copy in ./test-install (or whatever you put in TESTINSTALLDIR=). Make install will use whatever you passed into the various destination switches of ./configure (or ./autogen.sh).
