Base still needs some love and there is no core hacker knowing it correctly. Having students working on it would be nice, but the mentoring would be more complex. On the old easy hacks page, we had an item to move Base to use sqlite as instead of hsqldb... has it been done already? You can choose any UNO language you want for an extension... which means C++ is OK. As an interesting extension project, there is the CMIS protocol handler to implement. This can also turn out to be core hacking as there are quite some helpers in the core for this. It's not listed on any wiki page ATM as the project idea is too new, but I'ld be one of the mentors here.
