In ODF 1.2 [1] smoothing with splines is concretized. The spec now
contains a detailed description, how this splines have to be calculated.

The patches attached to bug 37889 implement this algorithms. The patches
are against LO3.4.0.2
This changes are large. The solution is tested on WinXp, but need
exhaustive testing on other platforms, especially 64bit versions.
If you agree to the changes, than the help and the UI has to be adapted too.
Both smoothing methods are parametric, they treat the curves as 2D
curves and not as function graphs. It might be an expedient task to
specify and implement a way to smooth function graphs with retaining the
function property to have only one y-value to an x-value.
