I understand that this is not a small change, but I really don't want to leave the 3.4 branch without fixing fdo#34214. https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=34214 The code only affects cell range selection with the arrow keys. Some issues still remain even with this fix, but at least it's much better than what we have currently.
