Hi there, I'd like to cherry-pick the following commit

This fixes https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=33756 and a duplicate is filed in https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=34831 Just to highlight that many users seem to hit this problem in 3.3, hence the need to backport to the 3.3 branch. Sorry about the renaming of a function that may make reviewing of this patch a bit harder.
