As it happens I managed to build LO fine now on my netbook (granted it took a bit of time - 15.5hrs :-D ). Looks like there was some weirdness on my machine at the time. I've managed to get another old machine which I intend on doing all my builds on. I believe I should be able to use Debian as a means of building for Android.
