example of how to replicate the problem
I have created an example that demonstrates the bug (see attachment).
1st case works. 2nd case fails on step 2 (notice the pattern of yellow cells:
it is expected to be a ladder-like pattern, as in 1st case step 2, but instead
it is all screwed up)
