I figured out the cause of the problem:
The Default Printer was set to a Wireless Printer that doesn't exist on the
network, and that adding long delays (waiting for the printer to respond) in
MANY different programs, including WordPad.
I wonder if there's a way to make Microsoft actually listen to a bug report, as
your selected default printer should not be adding long delays everywhere.
