Setting the "GenerateThumbnail" value to false in expert configuration dialog
accomplishes this.
Tools -> Options -> Advanced: Expert configuration... and search for
GenerateThumbnail
click the Edit button to toggle the vlaue
OK to exit the dialog, on restart the Thumbnails will be purged but the MRU
will remain with default 25 entries.
