I have already done what you suggested. I have upgraded to LibreOffice
Version: 5.1.4.2. I have the “non-Printing Characters” button toggled on and
then I have gone to Writer: Tools -> Options -> Formatting Aids. I permits me
to show Paragraph end, soft hyphens, spaces, non-breaking spaces , breaks and
math baseline aligment- BUT- it doesn’t give me the choice of displaying tabs!

Actually those are the controls for the Writer/Web Formatting Aids *not* the
Writer Formatting Aids. Please have another look.
