Bug ID: 174285
Summary: Libre Writer chokes multiple times a day on the same
document
Product: LibreOffice
Version: unspecified
Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: medium
Component: Writer
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
Description
After extensive editing of a long manuscript in Writer, the document begins
exhibiting unstable formatting behavior that persists across saves and
reopenings.
Observed symptoms include:
· Chapter headings suddenly displaying vertically, one character per
line.
· Large blank areas appearing in pages with no visible paragraph marks.
· Text being forced onto the next page, leaving approximately half a page
blank.
· Alignment commands sometimes having no visible effect.
· Temporary black horizontal bars appearing in the document after text
reflow.
· Problems reappearing after saving and reopening the document.
The document text itself is not lost, but formatting becomes increasingly
unstable.
Steps to Reproduce
Unfortunately I cannot provide an exact sequence of actions that consistently
reproduces the issue.
The issue occurred while editing a long-form manuscript over multiple editing
sessions.
Observed sequence:
1. Open existing ODT manuscript.
2. Edit document normally.
3. Save document.
4. Reopen document.
5. Layout anomalies appear, including vertical text, unexpected blank page
regions, and formatting controls behaving inconsistently.
Expected Result
Text layout remains stable across save/reopen cycles.
Formatting commands behave predictably.
Page layout remains unchanged unless explicitly modified by the user.
Actual Result
Document layout changes unexpectedly.
Examples observed:
· Heading text becomes vertically stacked.
· Large blank areas appear in otherwise normal pages.
· Content shifts to later pages.
· Temporary black formatting artifacts appear.
· Rebuilt document created via Paste Special → Rich Text Formatting
behaves significantly better than the original ODT.
Workarounds
Observed workarounds:
Vertical text
Selecting affected text and pressing:
Plain Text
Ctrl+M
restored normal appearance.
General corruption
Copying the manuscript into a new Writer document using:
Plain Text
Paste Special → Rich Text Formatting
produced a substantially more stable document.
However, this workaround does not preserve all document-level settings such as
headers and footers.
Additional Notes
The problem appears related to document formatting or document structure rather
than text content.
A newly created Writer document containing the same manuscript content behaves
better than the original ODT file.
This is absolutely infuriating. I have been fighting with this processor for
weeks to complete my 65,000 word novel
