--- Comment #3 from Justin L <[email protected]> ---
The problem here is related to Character units - and inheritance when those are
disabled.

For example w:leftChars="400" means the left margin should be 4 character units
long. An inherited leftChar supercedes all w:left margins! So it is a very
powerful property.

To disable an inherited leftChar, a style or paragraph needs to set
w:leftChar="0". But then what w:left does it inherit? NORMALLY a w:leftChar=0
is accompanied by a w:left, so in that case inheritance is irrelevant. But if
it isn't, then things get very tricky.

If I got this right, the priority when the paragraph defines w:leftChars=0 is:
-paragraph w:left
-direct numbering w:indentAt
-explicit w:left from a paragraph style that precedes the defining of numbering
-explicit w:left from the paragraph style that defines the inherited numbering
-inherited numbering's w:indentAt
-parent style w:left

Note that it can be rather tricky to identify what a w:left is.

In any case, at the moment LibreOffice doesn't 'inherit' a w:left from
numbering. It only inherits from paragraph styles. So the fix is to first check
if the numbering is defined (and has a w:left) before checking the parent
styles.
