I tested this a bit and looks like it depends on which slide is selected: if the first slide is selected, the highlight does not vanish *ever again during that Notes session*. So if you start with the first slide being selected, you will never see the issue when you select different slides and change focus to notes editing. Likewise, if you start with a different slide, the issue goes away when you select the first slide. For me, the issue is visible immediately when switching to Notes view and there is no need to focus to editing.
