Many things changed since 2011 and I think that the requested feature has been
available (in some sense) for a while.

To insert an m-dash type :---: (colon, three dashes, colon) and as soon as you
type the second colon an m-dash is inserted. There are many predefined
autocorrections under → Tools → AutoCorrect → AutoCorrect options → Replace
tab, and you can define your own. For example, you can type :A: under "Replace"
and copy-paste Ā under "With." Those are "apply as soon as possible"
autocorrects, but there are also "I need a space before and after" autocorrects
such as =/= turning into ≠ and "I need just a space after" such as _2 turning
into ₂ (this kind is defined through regular expression).

Not exactly a "keyboard shortcut" in the usual sense, but quite close, I think.
