I believe you imagine incorrectly. Checking the timestamp of a file every
period of time - say, a few seconds - is of entirely negligible performance
impact. And if that were somehow the issue, we could reduce the check frequency
further.

CMIS is a completely different ballgame, and when you share content over the
network I am pretty sure spend effort/time synchronizing activities.
