--- Comment #11 from V Stuart Foote <[email protected]> ---
Just read [1] that a requested TDF initiative to sponsor design of an Aptos
metric equivalent font, was "disolved" by TDF board decision.

This would have been TDF sponsorship of an Aptos equivalent, done along the
lines Redhat's sponsorship for Ascender to design Liberation Fonts (Sans,
Serif, Mono) and Oracle's supplement of (Sans Narrow). Or development under SIL
OFL of metric equivalents for Calibri (Carlito - tyPoland) or Cambria (Caladea
- Huerta Tipografia)

The same designer of the Liberation Fonts, Steve Matteson previously at
Ascender, also did the Aptos design that Microsoft owns.

No reason to expect that the Mr. Matteson could not be contracted and be able
to deliver a set of metric equivalents to Aptos but under SIL with GPL+FE
license. But no feedback from TDF if any effort was made, and now nothing
will happen.

That lack of foresight, and transparency, regards this request by the current
TDF board is regrettable as it continues difficulty of exchange OOXML and ODF
documents seamlessly.

Source Sans, under SIL OFL by Adobe is *NOT* metrically equivalent to Aptos.
And when previously available to ODF template, was removed for bug 136604

For those bitten individually buy this current situation of lack of an Aptos
equivalent font, you could download the full set of Aptos font [2] but for your
personal use under a MS EULA.

Still seems a TDF (for either LibreOFfice or Document Liberation project
benfit) should pursue a metrically equivalent font.
