The behavior you're describing does not occur in my version. However, as a side note: The <?> sections are where you're meant to add the numbers for the operations. I agree there is some room to be desired here as it works well highlighting the section for one number, but if you're using an operation with 2 variables (for example: a cube root), accessing the second number in the operation is not intuitive.
