IANAL either but this question has come up before, and it is specifically addressed in the library license <https://raw.githubusercontent.com/libopencm3/libopencm3/master/COPYING.LGPL3>which is LGPL3 *with an exception for linking* since it is impractical for doing dynamic linking in embedded systems. Specifically the license states:
1. Exception to Section 3 of the GNU GPL. You may convey a covered work under sections 3 and 4 of this License without being bound by section 3 of the GNU GPL. And it goes on to say you can offer your combined work (your code linked with the libopencm3 code) under your own terms. What you cannot do is update your copy of libopencm3 to your own special sauce, and ship that without giving back your changes to the project. --Chuckl On Thu, Nov 19, 2015 at 9:58 AM, Paul Fertser <fercer...@gmail.com> wrote: > Hello, > > On Thu, Nov 19, 2015 at 10:56:19AM +0100, Daniele Lacamera wrote: > > This distinction seems to be the most difficult thing to define in a > > LGPL context, if not in the obvious case of shared/dynamic linking > > suggested at point 4.d.1, which is not applicable in embedded systems > > core code. > > Sorry for chiming in and IANAL but my understanding is that if one can > (in reasonable sense, hence not counting RE, binary patching, writing > big compatibility shims etc) substitute an LGPL library with another > version of the same and all the changes to the said library are > provided under LGPL, then the requirements are fullfilled.
