No, the default branch is 2.0, but you can checkout 1.4 like this:

libevent$ git checkout -b 1.4.x origin/patches-1.4
Branch 1.4.x set up to track remote branch patches-1.4 from origin by
rebasing.
Switched to a new branch '1.4.x'

libevent$ git log -3
commit 2d8cf0b720cdd5f9f292f174a10ff74e62a380ec
