the ./configure should automatically detect and use ssl if it finds
it. take a look at the output of ./configure for something like this:
checking for ssl library... SSL_LIBS="-lssl -lcrypto"
if ./configure tells you something like no / not found, you need to
install the ssl package, possibly a package like ssl-dev, too, depending
on your distribution.
if you never compiled a program before:
download lftp source.
unpack: tar xvjf lftp-2.6.2.tar.bz2
cd lftp-2.6.2
read INSTALL. in short terms INSTALL tells you to do:
./configure
make
make install
for "make install" you should be root.
