Hello William, Not at all. On internal drive it should be compiling faster and you will not need to solve "USB drive as a root drive" tasks in addition.
Please give LFS a try. It is the best way how to learn GNU/Linux philosophy/logic and its internals optimized way in my opinion. (I really do not want to see you to go to the (Windows) Dark Side :-) ).
